Evanston, March 23, 2017
The Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association announced that Anthony Frandria has been named as Superintendent for Canal Shores Golf Course, effective immediately. Frandria replaces Tom Tully, who has
accepted a position in Aurora, Colo.
In making the announcement, Association President Chris Carey said, “The Board is excited to welcome Tony Frandria to Canal Shores. He brings great skill and experience as well as many new ideas for the course. We look to his guidance as we embark on a new chapter in the life of our neighborhood gem as it reaches its 100th year. We will miss Tom Tully greatly and we wish him all the best for future success as he embarks on a new journey and faces new challenges.”
“We believe that Tony will be an invaluable asset to Canal Shores as we continue to rebuild. It is our goal to provide a great golf experience for golfers at all skill levels and of all ages with a focus on the environment and expanded opportunity to serve the youth in our community,” added Carey. “I also want to acknowledge and recognize Steve Neumann, chair of the Grounds Committee, for his tireless effort in the search process. His understanding of our needs insured that we would find the best candidate.”
In accepting the position, Frandria said, “I am pleased to join Canal Shores in its effort to bring golf and recreation opportunities to the community. This is a unique course, with a great history, and is truly part of the fabric of the Evanston and Wilmette communities. I hope that I can contribute to its growth as we build the next generation of golfers and demonstrate the value and importance of this course to the neighborhood.”
With more than 20 years of experience in golf course management, Frandria comes to Canal Shores having been an independent owner and operator with AMF Turfgrass Consulting LLC. Prior to that, he served as course Superintendent at the Glen View Club for more than one dozen years. He is a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of American; the Environmental Institute for Golf; the Midwest Association of Golf Course Superintendents; the Chicagoland Association of Golf Course Superintendents; the Illinois Turfgrass Foundation; and the Penn State Turf Club. He has a degree from The Pennsylvania State University in Turfgrass/Golf Course Management and holds an Illinois State Pesticide License.
The Association is in the process of completing an ecological study to develop a master plan for managing the environment, habitats, and grounds of the 40-acre course. It is also working to develop a process and approach for a coordinated long term renovation of the property to provide for a more challenging golf experience, with a focus on providing expanded opportunities for youth and families, and serving the community.
The course recently was recognized for environmental excellence and designated a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. Frandria will report to Steve Neumann, chair of the Grounds Committee. He joins Dan Bulf who continues as Business Manager for the course.
