Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association
As 2015-16 President of the Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association, I want to welcome you to Canal Shores, our 18 hole, par 60 golf course on the banks of the North Shore Channel of the Chicago River. The Association oversees all operations of the course and is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization dedicated to maintaining and improving the course for recreational use by the community. We welcome golfers of all skill levels, and have a primary focus on serving youth and families. We offer youth golf camps and clinics, group lessons, private lessons and golf leagues for any level of golfer.
We also host corporate and charitable golf outings, tent parties and banquets on our course and patio. While golf is our primary purpose, we also offer year-round recreation, including cross-country skiing, family campouts, walking paths, cyclocross bike racing, and support for the Northwestern Wildcats football team with a variety of catering and tailgating options.
While we are located on public property, we are 100% privately supported. No tax dollars are used to maintain and improve the course. We welcome volunteers and donations, at any level of support. So come on over and play 9 or 18. It’s a fun course with unique obstacles and landmarks, like the Purple Line of the El and the Baha’i Temple. The greens and fairways are in very good condition and with your help, the course getting better every day! We hope you will support us in our efforts to make Canal Shores “the gem in your backyard” for future generations!
John Power, President
The Association, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, was formed in 1919 to manage the operations of the 18-hole Canal Shores Golf Course. It is established as a charitable organization and qualifies as an exempt organization under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The course runs along the North Shore Channel from Green Bay Road in Evanston to the Baha’i Temple near Wilmette Harbor. The land that comprises Canal Shores is sub-leased by the Association from the City of Evanston and Village of Wilmette, which lease property from its owner, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Cook County. It offers programs that celebrate the game of golf, with special programs designed for families, youth and the community.
