Restoring Nature, Connecting Community
Canal Shores has served as a beloved green space nestled along the North Shore Channel for over a century. However, decades of neglect transformed this once vibrant oak savannah into an overgrown tangle of invasive species.
Today, Canal Shores is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Thanks to the passionate efforts of the Lumberjacks and Lumberjills volunteer group, this space is being restored into a thriving ecosystem. Picture lush native forests filled with the sights and sounds of birds, butterflies, and wildflowers. Imagine trails where families and neighbors come together to connect with nature and each other—a place where nature thrives and the community flourishes.
What We’re Working Toward:
Healthy habitats: Removing invasive species and replacing them with native plants to encourage the return of native critters like red-tailed hawks, screech owls, and monarch butterflies.
Empowered stewards: Inspiring and training local volunteers through the Lumberjacks and Lumberjills of Canal Shores program.
Access to nature: Building and maintaining 3.1 miles of hiking trails making the space accessible for hiking, dog walking, an Audubon designated sanctuary for birdwatching, fishing, and ecological education.
